Every year the National Youth Jazz Collective runs a week-long Summer School, open to all-comers through a national audition tour to identify the most outstanding young musicians from around England. This year the standard is higher than ever!
After a week of being supported by NYJC’s stellar team of world-class teaching artists, the summer school ends with a concert, presenting the future of British jazz who perform an exciting and eclectic programme of improvised music.
The main theme for this year’s summer school is dance and film. Composer and improviser Neil Brand (frequently presents BBC4 programmes on film and teaches improvising to film at the Royal Academy of Music) will be working with each of the combos. Swing dancers Simon and Anna Selmon of SwingdanceUK and members of Jasmin Vardimon Dance Company (based in Ashford) will also be bringing the set lists to life!

NYJC’s brand new vocal project led by Pete Churchill and Anita Wardell offers a unique opportunity for young jazz vocalists, who don’t get the same level of ensemble opportunity as their instrumental peers in regional big bands.

NYJC’s Short Course is an inspirational 4-day residential programme for applicants who clearly demonstrate musical talent at their audition but are not quite ready for the main Summer School.
