Since 2007 NYJC has been uncovering England’s finest young jazz talent and treating them to an extraordinary in-depth week of tutoring and non-stop playing: discovering and learning with others of their own age and stage.
The result is stunning and this is the climax. Five combos of extraordinary 14-18 year olds take to the stage with new-found confidence, agility and enthusiasm. This year we feature exclusively works by great British jazz composers, arranged by the bands supported by outstanding tutors (most of whom are playing in the evening’s big concert), this performance will show how NYJC has played a formative role in shaping the future of jazz in the UK.
Owing to capacity issues this concert is for invited guests though some spaces may become available on the day.
Get the full picture of NYJC’s work as we hear from students taking part in our regional work and all-female Creative Leadership Ensemble plus a sneak preview from this Year’s Summer School and a glorious mement from our alumni.
Stages in the foyer and Hall 2 will feature players from London and Hampshire, including some of our youngest, playing tunes they have learned or composed over the past year.
We are delighted to be partnering with the National Jazz Archive to profile the incredible history of Jazz in the UK. Through images, objects, recordings and stories visitors can discover why our students are blessed to be joining one of the most vibrant and eclectic musical movements on the planet.
Reserve some time to wander through the basement foyer and consider how the musicians you hear through the day will not only be inheriting from the past but also writing the future as they pick up on the raw inventiveness that jazz personifies!
Open to players of all standards, 3 workshops at 11 am will give you the chance to get going as a jazz player. You’ll be led by some of the finest jazz tutors around, helping you to learn a few new tunes and improvise your own solo.
Check out our sign-up page online for more details and to guarantee a place or take your chance by turning up on the day at 10.30… (but make sure you bring your own instrument!)
