NYJC wins 2017 Best Musical Initiative Award!

Andy & Issie with Music Teacher Award 2017To our delight NYJC’s 10 years of  service to young jazz players has just received the 2017 Music Teacher Awards for Excellence!

On one of those fancy bow tie evenings in a ‘glittering’ Mayfair Hotel our Founder and Artistic Director Issie Barratt and Executive Director Andy Thornton stepped up to receive the “Best Musical Initiative” accolade from Classic FM’s Margherita Taylor.

We are particularly pleased that our work has made sure that education for jazz is on the map as a unique way of developing musicality. Amongst an incredible array of very worthy musical projects, mostly teaching classical or light music, it was wonderful to be singled out for carrying a torch for jazz and ‘supporting students to progress along a well conceived pathway from entry-level to professional musicians’, as the judges noted.

We’d like to pay particular credit to the wonderful tutors who deliver much of our work, making sure that it is of the highest quality, and also to the many partners that we’ve had over the years: enabling us to reach across the country and to special audiences. From a tiny core of regular staff we are making really good things happen – we hope you agree!
