NYJC is delighted to be working in partnership with Kings Place Music Foundation again, offering a series of jazz workshops for young musicians aged 8 -18 that focuses on small group improvisation in streamed groups, designed to support all levels of ability (whatever the instrument) from beginner to advanced. The programme consists of workshops led by the Collective’s Founder and Artistic Director, Issie Barratt with experienced NYJC tutors.

Each Sunday workshop ends with an informal concert given in the main foyer, comprising a performance given by the young musicians of the music learnt that day.

This is a great opportunity for all young jazz musicians wishing to work with expert jazz educators. Our tutors are also active members of the international jazz scene – but you don’t have to be an expert to join in. Participants are carefully placed into one of four ensembles, each made up of young musicians of a similar standard. This makes sure everyone gets to develop their playing as they participate in creating new music together.

The dates for Kings Place workshops 2018-19 are:

  • 11th November 2018
  • 16th December 2018
  • 20th January 2019
  • 17th February 2019
  • 7th April 2019
  • 30th June 2019

Times: 10am – 6pm with a performance at 4.30pm

We normally deliver the last Sunday’s performance in Kings Place Hall 2 (confirmed during the course).

Cost: £180 (pay upon acceptance on the course).

A bursary scheme is available for young people whose household is in receipt of benefits. You can request this when you are accepted on the course.

Committing to the Workshops

NYJC is really happy for participants to attend the first session as a taster, but requests that participants commit to all future sessions. This ensures educational continuity for the entire group. We appreciate there will be exceptional reasons that result in unforeseen absence, but please be aware of how this impact on the rest of the group. You must sign up for the whole series of workshops. This is important to achieve continuity.

You do not have to pay until you are accepted on the course.

Places are offered on a ‘first-come first-served’ by instrument basis (for example – if the first 12 applications were drummers we may have a cut-off and only offer 6, but if the first bass player turned up later in the process she/he would get in…). So better to apply now!
